Your Furniture is one of your home’s biggest assets and for multiple reasons. Not just to bring nicer appeal to your living or working spaces, but also to improve your overall health like having a couch with the right support for your body.
When well-cared for, your furniture can truly last a lifetime. There are pieces of furniture that have lasted over a century in length and for good reason: well-maintained and cleaned (in the right way), used some of the best furniture materials (stronger wood), re-upholstered and much more. But chances are, your furniture won’t last you and your family for a century, let alone 10+ years.
Furniture is not made the same as it was even 25 years ago. Often we hear stories of outdated or old furniture breaking down and we spend time and money doing everything we can to preserve it. Or, you hear stories of IKEA furniture completely breaking apart by the 3rd year of its’ use. Furniture is not meant to last forever, but it should hold strongly over time, not just in its value, but in its actual use to you.
Unlike your groceries, your furniture has no expiration date and when to upgrade your furniture is dependent upon a variety of factors that could effect its current value. Generally, a furniture brand may recommend an average life cycle of the product, but many things change over time; our preferences, needs and unexpected factors like home damages (smoke, water, etc.) that drastically effect our need to upgrade.
Below in our blog, we will cover all things furniture and furniture replacement. Most timelines given in this blog are recommendations to consider when thinking about buying new furniture and remember, your position may be different! Let us begin by taking a look at the Signs that you Should Replace Your Furniture by breaking down the most common furniture types:
Signs that You Should Replace Your Furniture (by furniture types)
1. Couches (typically lasts you 7 – 15 years)
If you happen to notice any of the following below, you may want to consider purchasing a new couch from BoxDrop North Spokane:
A. Your Couch happens to creak/squeak when you site down, stand up, or even move slightly.
B. When you sit down, you feel lack of support in the lumbar, or even lack of support in your cushions.
C. Visually torn upholstery, deep-embedded stains in the cushions, or even a bad odor coming from your couch.
Each of the items above are very important in determining the status of your couch and whether or not you are ready for an upgrade.
2. Dining Room Tables, Chairs and Sets (typically lasts you 15-20 years)
Other than obvious breaks or denting, or change in family size, it may be difficult to determine when to upgrade your dining room table. Below we have listed a few considerations:
A. Unsightly scratches, dents, burn or water marks. Sometimes, a mark or two can add to the character of the table, but that is solely dependent on the table style, designs and color. But, usually these markings cause structural damage to your table over time
B. If your dining table or dining chairs are squeaking. This squeaking generally means that the pieces are not held together as strongly or the material used to make the set is starting to wear down.
C. If your chairs have upholstery and the damage is too far-gone to repair/re-upholster.
D. If you start having back-pain that is abnormal (and have an updated/newer bed) If you are having back pains, your dining room chairs could be the biggest cause. But, if you have not updated your mattress in a while either, this may be a secondary cause of the pain.
3. Recliners / Upholstered Chairs (typically lasts you 7-10 years)
Many of the factors that effect your need to replace your Recliners align directly with Sofas and Couches:
A. Torn Up Upholstery that is no longer replaceable and or you have flipped the cushions multiple times over.
B. Various stains on the chairs/recliners or there is a bad odor.
C. One new item to consider is the mechanism within your Recliner. If your recliner doesn’t seem to recline as easily, makes abnormal noises when reclining, or doesn’t recline like it should/used to, than it is time for a new Recliner!
4. Cabinets, Drawers & End-Tables (typically lasts you 5-20 years)
If it seems like the lifespan of your cabinets, drawers or end-tables is wide, then you are right. These furniture types can either last you a very short period of time, or can last you a lifetime, and that depends on how you care for each furniture item and the consistent use over time. An end table that is next to your master bedroom won’t last you as long as your end-table in a spare bedroom. Here are a few considerations to make when thinking of a new cabinet, drawers, or end-table:
A. How often the piece of furniture is used. Is it in a room with a lot of traffic, or does the furniture piece get used rarely?
B. How has the furniture piece been cleaned? Certain materials may clean the surface but over time, can breakdown the wood, if the right cleaning materials isn’t used.
C. Where in your home is the piece located? Many people do not think of the damage that sunlight can have on a piece of furniture. If you do not constantly rotate your furniture in that space, the sunlight can slowly damage the furniture over time (similar to a glass of water with ice and leaving a “water-ring” in the wood) Even if the piece has glass on the surface, it is important to double-check the framing.
It is important to remember that every piece of furniture is different and there are many factors to consider before buying. The most important one being the quality of the furniture types that you have.
Quality is the biggest impact of the lifespan of your furniture; when you buy a cheaper IKEA-style piece of furniture, you understand that it will need replacing sooner than a more expensive, or even hand-made piece of furniture. Also the larger ticket price of the hand-made may not seem palatable at first, but when you consider all of the ways your furniture can breakdown, it may seem like a better idea to pay for a more expensive piece of furniture now, to save you on furniture replacement, furniture upholstering, and damage repair over time.

In March of 1912, a man named John Lane purchased a box plant in Altavista, Virginia. His son, Ed Lane, was 21 at the time and had little manufacturing experience. Ed was encouraged by his father to try his hand at starting a chest factory in the newly acquired plant. The Lane family didn’t know how successful their new venture was going to be, therefore, they didn’t start out putting their name on it. In 1972, Lane bought a small reclining chair company in Tupelo, Mississippi, named Action Industries. Action sustained tremendous growth through gains in market share and product diversification through the next 20 years becoming a major force in the upholstered furniture industry. Eventually, Action changed its name to Lane Furniture. Today, Lane is owned by United Furniture Industries, one of the fastest growing and largest manufacturers of upholstery and case goods in the U.S.
Lane continuously works to offer its employees the latest technology. We were the first company to test and use a CNC (computer numerical control) Bandsaw, a precision cutter that cuts all of the wood-frame patterns for our products. We also use CNC wood cutting routers.
Our computerized inventory management system allows products to be tracked for exact location at any time during the manufacturing process. Lane manages to stay one step ahead of the competition by continuously searching for the latest technology to use in the production of our products.
Lane promises to deliver comfortable, quality, and innovative furniture that today’s consumer desires. Our price is just as comfortable as our furniture.
